Why Measuring Matters

Buying a rug or mirror online? Size is everything. Too small, and your piece gets lost. Too large, and it overwhelms the space. Getting the measurements right is the key to a polished, well-balanced room.

At Home Interiors Online, we help you choose pieces that fit beautifully and function perfectly — from area rugs to statement wall mirrors.

How to Measure for a Rug

Living Room:

Rule: The rug should anchor your seating area.

Layout

Rug Size Tip

All furniture on rug

Go large — 240x340cm or bigger

Front legs on rug

160x230cm – 200x290cm works well

Small rug + coffee table

At least 120x170cm, ideally larger

Bedroom:

Rule: Your rug should extend at least 45–60cm past the sides of the bed.

Bed Size

Recommended Rug Size

Double

160x230cm or 200x290cm

King/Super

200x290cm or larger

Lay the rug under the bottom 2/3 of the bed — not right to the headboard.

Dining Room:

Rule: The rug should be large enough for chairs to move freely.

  • Add 60–70cm extra on all sides of your dining table
  • Ideal for rectangular or round rugs depending on table shape

Hallway or Entryway:

Rule: Leave 10–15cm space between rug edge and walls.

  • Use runners in long, narrow spaces
  • Place vertically in larger entrances for a welcoming flow

How to Measure for a Mirror

Above Furniture (Console, Dresser, Fireplace):

Rule: Mirror width should be 2/3 the width of the furniture below it.

  • Leave 15–20cm gap between top of furniture and bottom of mirror
  • Centred both horizontally and vertically

Full-Length Standing Mirror:

Rule: Place where you'll stand 1.5–2m back to view your full height.

  • Common sizes: 50x150cm to 80x180cm
  • Leaning mirrors work well for a relaxed, modern vibe

Ideal for bedrooms or walk-in closets — adds height and reflection

Mirror in a Hallway or Entry:

Rule: Eye-level placement = 120–135cm from the floor to the mirror centre.

  • Use arched or round mirrors for visual softness
  • Position to reflect light from windows or opposite artwork

Mirror Wall Gallery:

  • Combine 2–4 smaller mirrors in a symmetrical grid
  • Keep spacing even (5–8cm apart)
  • Match frames to existing finishes (gold, black, oak etc.)

Tools You’ll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Painter’s tape (to outline shape on wall/floor)
  • Spirit level (for wall hanging)
  • Wall anchors (for heavier mirrors)

Final Pre-Buy Checklist

·         Have you measured the wall/floor space accurately?
